To hold a principle is to say: my actions are not random.
They come from somewhere, an inner philosophy built from reflection, experience, and intention. And yes, you will break it. Everyone does. Life is too messy, too fast, too human for perfect adherence.
Here is the distinction that matters
Breaking a principle is a moment. Having none is a condition. A person without principles drifts. A society without them falls apart. A leader without them is dangerous, because power without an anchor is power without accountability.
That is why our questions need to change
We keep asking candidates what they will do. We should be asking what they believe. Promises can be focus-grouped. Principles cannot be faked so easily; they leak out in the moments no one is watching. When the cameras are off. When the pressure spikes. When the easy answer and the right answer split in two directions.
Even peace runs on this logic, inner peace, civic peace, all of it. Principles hold you steady when everything else is noise. They are what let you respond with clarity instead of reflex. Peace was never passive. It is a discipline, a stance you keep choosing.
Ask candidates to enumerate their principles. Ask them to name them out loud. Demand the answers from anyone who seeks to lead you.
