The Surprising Connection Between Volcanic Eruptions and Peaceful Thinking

A Moment of Reflection at Kilauea Crater  As I stood in awe at the mouth of Kilauea Crater on February 11, 2025, my mind wandered, contemplating the numerous historical events that have transpired since the dawn of magnificent volcanos.  I envisioned my parents, my wife’s parents, and both of our grandparents, as well as all our family ancestors, who lived and breathed during previous generations of  volcanic eruptions—whether they were dormant or in full force. I felt an eruption of memories and ancestral connections.  The Cycle of War and Peace  As a peace ambassador, I also contemplated the cyclical nature of war and peace, including violent outbreaks and the subsequent cessation of war treaties.  It is time to rise from the ashes and end the cycles of recurring conflict.    Nature and Human Existence: A Paralleling Force  Art not only mirrors life, and life not only mirrors art; witnessing the raw power of an erupting volcano, I realized that life parallels nature. We are experiencing the echoes of the earth and still living in a volcanic rhythm.     Lessons from Pompeii: Time Standing Still  I reflected on a past trip to Pompeii where my wife and I witnessed ashen bodies frozen in statuesque poses. It was morbidly eerie to see a permanent piece of art created by what was once a living breathing human caught forever in a frozen moment in time.  The eruption of Mount Vesuvius led to the destruction of Pompeii. The disaster caused a major societal impact, affecting local governance and economies. The first time in recorded history that time stood still as humans were encased in an ashen shell.    How Volcanoes Shape Civilization  Volcanic eruptions serve as a powerful reminder of nature’s immense forces that have shaped the physical landscape and played a pivotal role in shaping human history.  These natural events have had a profound impact on various aspects of human existence, including migration patterns, technological advancements, cultural developments, and political landscapes.   Throughout history, humanity’s remarkable adaptability and innovative spirit have been instrumental in ensuring survival and progress. Volcanoes shaped civilization.    The Hawaiian Islands: A Testament to Volcanic Creation  The Hawaiian Islands, a chain of volcanic islands, exemplify the process of volcanic island formation. As the Pacific Plate moved northwestward, magma rising through the Earth’s crust gave birth to these islands, transforming them into the paradise we know today.  A Call for Global Peace  What isn’t captured in the accompanying video is my wish that the world’s enemies had been standing with my wife and me and coming to the realization that we are not so important nor are our reasons to hate and kill. Why waste the most precious gift of all, a chance to live, love and make a difference.  A time for true harmony amidst eruptions.

Destination Peace Meets CEO

Several weeks ago, we greeted a young visionary leader from Nigeria after his plane arrived at Dulles Airport. Our drive back to our home faded into minutes due to the conversation with our engaging guest.  Though his overnight visit at our home moved like an hourglass with rapidly descending sand, we relished every “grain of time” with our blessed guest.  Chukwuma Okenwa was about to participate in the International Anti-Corruption Conference held in Washington DC. For his inaugural trip to the USA, he attended this conference with other internationally distinguished leaders and created unforgettable memories that will further ennoble him as he traverses a long, difficult but highly rewarding road to improving the safety and life sustaining values necessary for a civilized, compassionate world.  Our esteemed Board Director, Naila Chowdhury, arrived at our home to meet Chukwuma and we filmed a memorable “Groundbreaking Conversation” together.  Regardless of the brevity of Chukwuma’s visit, my wife and I have formed a lifelong relationship with this heroic statesman, visionary, teacher, and leader. We look forward to the day we meet his devoted wife and adoring children and visit his school in Nigeria.  We hope you will view our most recent Groundbreaking Conversation digitally catalogued with our Destination Peace videos.  Biography of Chukwuma Okenwa: Chukwuma Ephraim Okenwa, popularly known as CEO due to his initials, is a Social Entrepreneur and a Public Affairs Analyst  He is the Director of Queen’s Model Group of Schools and the TV host of Enjoy Mathematics on ESBS Channel 50.  CEO is the brain behind the one Nigeria Reality Project, endorsed by the National Orientation Agency and the project lead of ADA 042 Tourism and Cultural pageant.  As an SME enthusiast, he’s been involved as a Mentor in projects such as Youth Empowered by Coca-Cola and the Boost Your Business training powered by Facebook.  He is the Executive Director of LEAD NETWORK, Principal Partner at H-Formance Consulting, and the founder of CEO Media Agency.  Okenwa has been appointed twice as a YALI Network Influencer in Nigeria. He is a fellow of the Leadership Course in Criminal and Security Intelligence Management (Defense Intelligence College, Abuja) and a Diplomacy 4.0 Alumnus of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

Kilauea Volcano Erupting

The Kilauea Volcano is Erupting

There are still places on earth to stand virtually and not virtual, in astonishment and awe.  During a visit to the Kilauea Volcano, you experience the essence of traditionalists, religion, customs, and evolution.  An active volcano is an ongoing historical testament to the Creators original plans for the earth and mankind. Standing witness at 4,000 feet above sea level, you feel that you have traveled back into primordial time.  There is so much left dormant and volatile in an ever-changing world. Unpredictable and predictable eruptions of violence occur in every generation.  Destination Peace is working to use music to “scale” upward past the destructive “explosiveness” of polarizing disputes and misunderstandings to “reach the unreachable stars.” Watch a Short Clip of The Kilauea Volcano Erupting – by Emauel C. Polar explorers Fiona and Mike Thornewill

An Expedition to Baltimore USA

Pushed to an extreme, endurance and patience, have motivated the determined and undeterred to reach beyond their capabilities.  Fiona and Mike Thornewill are two such rare “climb to the top” explorers. They have climbed the South Pole as the first and only married couple. Fiona is the first to have all alone without aid reached the South Pole in record breaking time, and the first woman to reach both Poles (see list of accomplishments). Mike and Fiona have also brought up two of the most respectful and ethically driven sons, my wife and I, have had the pleasure to meet.  Most home-officed working husbands and wives mostly “struggle” with chore scheduling issues and who ends up putting out the trash. Wife and husband, Fiona and Mike, pulled 200-pound sleds loaded with food and equipment during a 966-mile treacherous journey. Imagine, the driving distance from Savannah Georgia to Houston Texas is 966 miles (1554 km). At an average of three miles per hour imputing weight and height it would take 2,204,026 steps or 5,784.4 lengths of the London Bridge and have burned 98,764 calories. Their awe-inspiring stories have nearly convinced me to walk to Houston because according to calculations that would result in a net loss of 30 pounds!  We met Fiona Thornewill following her stirring lecture series during our recent June 2022 trip to Europe. There is a significant reason Queen Elizabeth bestowed her with an MBE. Fiona epitomizes perseverance, grit, and the inner and outer strength to transcend whatever is inside of us that persuades us we cannot go further.  Where a typical athlete eventually intervenes to stop a relentless treadmill, Fiona turns the switch higher and higher until it tilts, and when the premium fuses have blown relentlessly chooses to continue onward and upward.  Several weeks ago, Fiona, Mike and their two sons traveled from England to the United States and graced and blessed our home with an overnight stay. There is a marked difference in the tone and quality of a conversation while engaging with an entire family of high achievers. At the dinner table speaking with the parent-accomplished-explorers and talented progeny who are destined to be recognized as discoverers and inventors was as satisfying as my wife’s cooking. That is the highest compliment possible!  UK woman claims South Pole record  Fiona Thornewill walked 700 miles in 42 days  BBC NEWS | UK | England | Nottinghamshire | UK woman claims South Pole record  Fiona Thornewill’s Ascending Accomplishments  Awards  Mike Thornewill’s Ascending Achievements  Brief History  Learn more about destination peace at Destination Peace

Holocaust remembrance and silence

Witnessing and Speaking the Unspeakable

At times, silence is uplifting and soothing; other times, silence is heavy and disconcerting.  During the month of June 2022, the silence my wife and I heard at a Concentration Camp was louder and at more decibels than screaming.  Our feeling of stillness and heartbreaking contemplation was upsettingly punctuated by gunnery firing and loud detonations at an adjacent German military range.  My wife and I were confronted with countless invisible images passing into our thoughts as we stood before successive mass graves at the Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp filled with innocent Jewish men, women and children, prisoners of war and those who met criteria for all Nazi Concentration Camps, Jews and anyone for any unimaginable reason who were classified as an undesirable to the Nazi’s.  The Bergen Belsen Museum and headstones on the grounds including Anne Frank’s, left no doubt in our minds that the administrators here are determined to maintain detailed testimony and testament to all the victims. We were deeply moved not only by the vast exhibit but by encountering German teenagers immersed in taking notes as they stared with concerned eyes at the photographs and descriptions of the atrocities.  We were reassured to know that it is mandatory for all German school children to visit a Concentration Camp.  A month before traveling to Germany, Destination Peace presented an online program entitled “A Survivor Speaks: An Unforgettable Hour with Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Child Survivor of the Holocaust. Despite her brutal time as a child in Concentration Camps including Bergen Belsen, she focused on how the survival of humanity requires unity and kindness. A tour guide during our bus trip from Bergen Belsen said “at least we can say something good about the Nazi’s. They did build the Autobahn.”  It was shocking that anything positive could be so cavalierly referenced about Nazi’s.  The major American outlet news sources will vilify a politician without being able to find a single redeeming quality and Nazi’s with the eternal stain of unremitting blood on their hands are accorded a redemptive compliment.  This is what has happened to language. Nouns, adjectives, and verbs have been ambushed by those whom the silent majority of society gives passive permission to “fix selective” corrections. Scholarly dictionaries and encyclopedias have become obsolete.  How often do you hear concerned protesters correcting what is allowed to be repeated ad infinitum about Jews in any era?

destination peace at United Nations

Destination Peace visits the United Nation

Tonight a United Nations-sponsored gathering took place in anticipation of (and as a “pep rally” for) tomorrow’s speakers and participants in the annual POWER OF COLLABORATION Global Summit held at the United Nations. This august body brings together the world’s most diverse, inclusive, and innovative ideas, inspiring global leaders to collectively pursue endeavors that embody the best of our human values. At the core of the summit goal is private and business sector engagement and partnership in driving sustainable solutions toward inclusive and equitable economies.  The event began with rousing welcoming speeches by the co-founders of Impact Leadership 21, Janet Salazar and Constance Peak. A personal highlight was hearing from a passionate candidate for president of Liberia, MacDella Cooper.  I was humbled by the warm introductory welcome by Robin Sol Lieberman, author and founder of True Charisma, before I sang a song to set the tone before dinner. (See the video here!)  Our dear friends from UCSD, Dr. Suresh Subramani, Dr. Ramesh Rao and Prof. Naila Chowdhury (who have appeared in previous Destination Peace blogs!), are presenting at the United Nations tomorrow. We had the mutual pleasure of spending time with Mr. Manoj Kumar (attending from Bangalore, India), who works with the Foundation for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship for Tata Trusts.  It was an honor meeting and speaking to Ambassador Chowdhury about his dream of peace and how he has actualized his vision and passion through his personal passion for creating a “culture of peace.” The ambassador is the recipient of the U Thant Peace Award and UNESCO Gandhi Gold Medal for creating this “Culture of Peace.”  Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, Former Under-Secretary General and High Representative of the UN; Founder of the Global Movement for the Culture of Peace  It was also a distinct and special honor for me to once again speak with Dr. Peter Salk, whose lifelong dedication to significantly increasing the quality of life through science and medicine is only exceeded by his compassion for others.

Canartic Meets Cantorial in Varanasi

Musical Worlds Collide in Perfect Harmony

Canartic meets Cantorial; Cantorial meets Canartic  On February 23, 2017, ancient legendary musical worlds merged into one. It was such a rare occurrence that I figure it could probably span three total solar eclipses, if it has ever occurred to begin with!  A virtuosic fifth-generation master Hindu Canartic Hindustan violinist opened his majestic residence and shared his legacy of Hindu traditional music with a career half-century master American Jewish cantor who comes from a family of cantors. Not to mention it occurred in Varanasi, India on the night of the solemn festival Maha Shivratri (originating around the 5th century!).  This musical encounter took place in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India as well as the most populous country subdivision in the world. The state, located in the northern region of the Indian subcontinent, has over 200 million inhabitants.  The following are two short excerpts from our indoor musical “aurora borealis.”

Interfaith Understanding and Destination Peace

Don’t Touch, You’ll Get Burned

A seasoned clergyman’s reflections about India, Hinduism, and religion in general:  “Don’t touch, you’ll get burned.”  One time or another, almost every child has been admonished with that phrase. As a youngster grows older, they acquire instinctive ways to measure how hot something is and where you can eventually touch without getting scalded.  It’s become tellingly obvious that engaging with different religions tends to be off-limits to one’s own religion. Yes… there are the yearly token-immaculate ecumenical gatherings, or a guest appearance at someone’s seder, christening, or wedding… but how many make an “educational pilgrimage” to understand another religion’s sense of awe and respect for its core belief system?  Descriptions of religions in terms of their similarities and differences are prevalent on the internet and have been readily available at libraries. The religion I have faithfully followed my entire life contributed to a firm understanding and deep appreciation of Judaism: from an observant home to an Orthodox elementary, Orthodox junior high, Orthodox high school and then on to Yeshiva University for a Masters in Psychiatric Social Work (on a clergy track).  For almost half a century, I have been a practicing clergyman for the faith that I embrace, believe in, live, and love.  Personally, I was fascinated by why, where, and how other religions worship and began at a relatively young age studying other Abrahamic religions.  During earlier decades, the rabbi who served with my clergy father taught and served as a role model to me. Decades later, he eventually became the rabbi I also blessedly served with in Baltimore, Maryland. This rabbi was part of a very select ecumenical mission to the Vatican regarding the papal declaration on the relations of the church to non-Christian religions, known as Nostra Aetate. Rabbi Joel Zaiman served as the Chair of the National Council of Synagogues when he attended the Vatican II Conference with Pope John Paul II. He later became a founder of a Baltimore based Institute that engages scholars of varying religious backgrounds.  This scholar of scholars has taught and lived his Judaism by its holy book, the Torah, and further  carried out its loftiest ideals through bridging repaired roadways of mutual respect and understanding.  Together with my late precious father, his selfless ecumenical choices influenced me the year before my bar mitzvah (51 years ago!) when Rabbi Zaiman went to Rome. At the same time, I was hearing my father’s stories as a Jewish Marine who sang for dying Christian soldiers or at their funerals on Iwo Jima: ranging from the Lord’s Prayer to Ave Maria when requested, as he would comfort his interfaith brethren. I am also indebted to my colleague Dr. Rabbi Moshe Shualy’s unflinching guidance and vast wisdom about Hinduism and Buddhism.  Within just the past few years I have been privileged to:  …the list can continue, but I don’t want to lose you! Back to “Don’t Touch, You’ll Get Burned:”  My old and unknown new friends on social media: sometimes you have to get burned a few times to awaken yourself to reach out to shake the hand of someone different from yours. You have to get out of your comfort zone and take a risk, despite possible rejection.  Our month-long trip to India has now concluded. We stayed at a total of 10 hotels, flew a total of 8 flights (domestic and international), ate as strict vegetarians, and only ingested bottled water.  Before leaving we were given inoculations and pills for Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Diphtheria, and Malaria pills (for yet another week).  Last night, my wife and I both awakened in the middle of the night (or was it day?). Independently each of us thought: “why is our hotel room floor carpeted?” Neither one of us had yet fully realized that we were actually home again!  Today as we awoke, our eldest son turned 39 (February 28th). As of February 29th (non-existent this year), Janice and I will have been married 41 glorious years (or is it that we’ve been kept young at only 10 observed anniversaries?).  Destination Peace will continue to be the path for the rest of our lives. Inspired by our forefathers, teachers, and trailblazers; by our foremothers, professors, and pioneers.  If you believe that we were created by, in, and because of love, then let please also choose to live in the highest state of all love: the love for all.  Whatever your belief in God is, or is not; whether or not you embrace your faith; whether it was chosen by or handed down to you; remember that a poor child anywhere in the world needs to eat. How we act must always take precedence over what we say about what we may have planned to do.  If you have read through the multitude of blogs regarding our India experience, I thank you on behalf of Destination Peace.  This “last word” of our #IndiaTrip blog, appropriately, will conclude with Dr. Suresh Subramani’s favorite words to live by:  “Man becomes great exactly in the degree to which he works for the welfare of his fellow men.” – Gandhi
