The Inner Child at Work

With the extensive traveling that comes with being a World Peace Ambassador for Destination Peace, whatever limited discretionary time remaining at home has been devoted to assorting and cataloguing decades of memorabilia. Can you imagine the excitement and surprise discovering a reel to reel recording of yourself singing a song like an “aspiring opera singer,” auditioning for your parents invited dinner guests at the tender age of five?

Many careers remarkably began in the budding hearts and evolving minds of impressionable children.

Two weeks ago I attended the San Diego International Film Festival and met (in a fleeting timeless moment) the legendary actor Laurence Fishburne. He disclosed that he was “bitten” by the “acting bug” when he debuted  at the age of 10 in “In My Many Names and Days. Two years later at the age of 12 he played a character in “One Life to Live.” With humility and grace he accepted the Gregory Peck Lifetime Achievement Award.

How many children actually grow up to live out their dreams in real life? I had three career-related dreams and, incredibly, they all came true: to follow in my father’s esteemed footsteps to be a cantor, to perform concerts with orchestras and choirs, and to promote world peace through music.

I am looking forward to attending future San Diego International Film Festivals in order to witness further mesmerizing speeches of honorees. It is at these priceless moments that legendary actors play themselves, and then participate in well-deserved applause that no movie audience can provide in the same way.
