Elmina Castle Ghana

Step into Ghana’s Dungeons in Elmina Castle: A Vital Pilgrimage to Confront Humanity’s Darkest Truths

Today, my beloved wife and I, in the twilight of our septuagenarian years, along with our much younger cherished kindred spirit Twyla, embarked on a profound pilgrimage to Elmina Castle, perched on the rugged shores outside Cape Coast, Ghana. This, our first sojourn to the African continent, has unfolded not merely as a journey across geography but as a soul-stirring odyssey, a new beginning that has etched itself indelibly upon our hearts. In the autumn seasons of our lives, this experience has proven transformative, a poignant reminder of humanity’s capacity for both unimaginable cruelty and resilient hope. Historical Overview of Elmina Castle and Its Dungeons Elmina Castle stands as one of the oldest European-built structures in sub-Saharan Africa, erected by the Portuguese in 1482. Strategically positioned along the Gold Coast, it began as a trading post for gold, ivory, and spices, a symbol of rapidly increasing European exploration. However, by the 16th century, its purpose darkened as it became a pivotal hub in the transatlantic slave trade, a role it played for nearly three centuries under Portuguese, Dutch, and later British control. The castle’s imposing walls, once a testament to mercantile ambition, became a prison for countless African souls, ensnared in the brutal machinery of human trafficking. The dungeons of Elmina Castle are a harrowing testament to humanity’s capacity for cruelty. These cramped, airless chambers, carved into the castle’s stone foundation, held hundreds of men, women, and children in unimaginable conditions. Packed so tightly they could scarcely move, captives endured suffocating heat, filth, and starvation, often for months, awaiting the ships that would carry them across the Atlantic through the infamous “Door of No Return.” The walls, stained with the anguish of those who suffered, bear silent witness to the dehumanization inflicted upon them. Men were shackled in chains, women subjected to sexual violence, and children stripped of their innocence. The air in these dungeons, thick with despair, still seems to carry the echoes of cries and prayers unanswered. Perhaps most chilling is the coexistence of a “sacred” and profanity within the castle’s walls. A church, ostensibly a place of worship and moral guidance, stood in grotesque proximity to the dungeons, its pews filled by European traders and officials who professed faith while profiting from human misery. The governor’s quarters, perched above the dungeons, epitomized this moral dissonance. A trapdoor in his floor, accessible by a ladder, allowed him to peer into the women’s dungeon below, selecting victims to be brought to his bedroom for rape, a stark illustration of power wielded without conscience. This juxtaposition of a house of God and a governor’s predatory privilege reveals the depths of hypocrisy, where faith was twisted to justify subhuman treatment of fellow humans, and the sanctity of life was forsaken for greed and lust. The inscription at the castle’s entrance, “May humanity never again perpetrate such injustice against humanity,” serves as both a lament and a clarion call. It implores future generations to remember the atrocities committed here and to guard against the darkness that allows such horrors to flourish. A Personal Reflection The weight of Elmina Castle lingers in my soul, a tremor that refuses to subside. Standing within those dungeons, I felt the suffocating grip of history’s darkest chapter, a visceral reminder of mankind’s capacity to abandon its own humanity. Yet from this shaking within, a fire has been kindled, a resolute determination to champion peace, compassion, and understanding in every corner of the world. Our guide, a brilliant beacon of wisdom, shared how some sought to demolish this castle and erase the evidence of its dungeons, hoping future generations might dismiss such horrors as myth. But these walls stand as an unyielding testament, a sacred charge to bear witness and ensure such atrocities are never forgotten. A Heartfelt Plea I urge all, especially young adults drawn to Africa’s vibrant landscapes for safaris, to include Ghana’s Elmina Castle in their journey. No tale or textbook can convey the raw, transformative power of bending low to enter those shadowed dungeons, where the air itself seems to hold the weight of suffering. In that darkness, you confront the depravity of humanity’s worst impulses, the moment when mankind ceases to be man, nor kind, wholly forsaking the Divine spark of God’s grace. Yet, in that same darkness, I am compelled to seek the spark of Divinity in every soul, to nurture it, and to reflect God’s boundless grace through acts of love and justice.  This experience will resonate within us for the rest of our lives, a call to carry forward the light of hope against the shadows of our past. A Global Model for Mayors: Skopje’s Renaissance Under Danela Arsovska

In an era of mounting urban challenges, Skopje stands as a beacon of hope, thanks to the visionary leadership of Mayor Danela Arsovska. Since her historic 2021 election as the city’s first female mayor, Mayor Arsovska has transformed North Macedonia’s capital into a shining model of sustainable, inclusive, and culturally vibrant urban revival, a blueprint for cities worldwide. Mayor Arsovska’s results-driven approach is best exemplified by the Skopje Urban Greening Master Plan. Committing to plant over 100,000 trees annually and engaging schools, organizations, and local citizens, this ambitious initiative is reversing environmental neglect and bringing new life to the city’s neighborhoods. Five new mega-parks, a botanical garden, a wastewater treatment facility, and the adoption of sustainability standards show that Skopje’s green promise is not only visionary but also accountable and measurable. Yet, Mayor Arsovska’s leadership reaches far beyond environmental renewal. Her focus on equal opportunity has brought groundbreaking programs for people with disabilities and the elderly, strengthening social cohesion in a city celebrated for its diversity, uniting Macedonians, Albanians, Roma, and more. Skopje’s selection as the European Capital of Culture for 2028, through its “Culture Over Division” initiative, is proof of her commitment to healing divides and inspiring urban pride through creativity and shared heritage. We are deeply impressed by Mayor Arsovska’s visionary leadership and commitment to creating a better future for Skopje’s citizens. Her tireless efforts to promote cultural and educational initiatives have not only enriched the city’s fabric but also perfectly aligned with Destination Peace’s mission of fostering global understanding and cooperation. As a testament to her outstanding work, our founder is eager to personally meet with Mayor Arsovska at the close of 2025 to express our admiration for her policies and initiatives. We believe that her transformative leadership serves as a shining example of how cities can be catalysts for positive change, driving innovation and inclusive urban progress that can be replicated worldwide. By recognizing and celebrating Mayor Arsovska’s outstanding leadership, we aim to strengthen the bond between Destination Peace and the city of Skopje, the birthplace of Mother Theresa. We will learn firsthand how Mayor Arsovska is inspiring a new generation of leaders and change-makers who bask in her commitment to creating a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world. As chair of the UN Forum of Mayors and a member of the Global Parliament of Mayors, she’s connecting local progress to global solutions, championing practical action and unity over empty rhetoric. Mayor Arsovska’s story is a call to mayors everywhere: Cities can be laboratories for innovation and engines of hope. Through bold vision, inclusivity, and action, Skopje proves that urban transformation is possible. Her leadership is an inspiration for every city striving to overcome challenges and deliver momentous results for every citizen.

The Silent Majority’s Obligation to Protect Democracy from Extremism on The Left and on The Right

In today’s America, a disturbing pattern is emerging that should concern every citizen who values stability and democratic norms, regardless of political leaning. While many of us in the middle ground try to avoid the exhausting political noise, history warns that our silence may be enabling a dangerous convergence of extremes. When Opposites Attract Chaos A single extreme faction did not engineer the Weimar Republic’s collapse; it happened when radically opposed groups created such instability that democracy itself buckled. Both communists and fascists, despite their mutual hatred, effectively worked toward the same goal: undermining public faith in democratic institutions. Today, we see alarming echoes of this pattern. Consider the former prime-time cable news host who abandoned traditional conservative principles for populist outrage, routinely questioning America’s alliances while promoting conspiracy theories that undermine public trust. His counterparts exist on the left like the congressional representative known for inflammatory rhetoric about Israel and America’s role in the world, who frames complex issues in absolutist terms. The extremist figures seem opposed on the surface, but their methods share striking similarities: The Convergence That Threatens Us All What’s most concerning is how these opposed factions sometimes find common ground in their distrust of mainstream institutions. When a conspiracy-promoting congresswoman known for provocative statements finds agreement with progressive firebrands on questioning federal agencies, it reveals how extremism can converge from opposite directions. Why Your Voice Matters Now The prestigious Schieffer Series at the Center for Strategic and International Studies repeatedly emphasizes that healthy democracies require engaged, reasonable citizens who participate in civic life. When moderate Americans check out of political discourse: If we face another contested election or economic crisis, these converging extremes could unite against our democratic system itself, making today’s political dysfunction seem mild by comparison. A Path Forward As moderate Americans, we must: The threats facing our democracy don’t wear just one political label. The journalist hosted lectures referenced earlier remind us that throughout history, democracy’s greatest danger comes when reasonable people surrender the center, allowing extremes to define our national conversation. Our silence isn’t neutrality, it’s permission. The true silent majority must find its voice before those exploiting our divisions drown it out completely. Emanuel C. Juneteenth

From Emancipation to Equality: What Juneteenth Means in 2025

The Historical Significance of Juneteenth Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day of reflection and resilience, honoring the end of slavery in the U.S. and the ongoing fight for equality. For many, it’s a reminder of delayed justice and the strength of those who endured. Tulsa’s Connection to Juneteenth In Tulsa, Oklahoma, my birthplace, Juneteenth carries deep significance. The city is home to the historic Greenwood District, once known as “Black Wall Street,” a thriving hub of Black-owned businesses. In 1921, the Tulsa Race Massacre devastated this community when a white mob attacked, killing hundreds and destroying homes and businesses. The massacre, born of racial hatred, echoes the delayed freedom Juneteenth commemorates… both reflect the struggle against systemic oppression. While Juneteenth celebrates emancipation, Tulsa’s history underscores the persistent fight for justice and the need to rebuild after unimaginable loss. Greenwood’s resilience mirrors the spirit of Juneteenth: a commitment to rise, heal, and thrive despite adversity. A Call to Action for Justice and Unity Today, Juneteenth invites us to honor the past while working for a better future. It’s a call to recognize the pain of history, like the Tulsa Race Massacre, and to build communities rooted in equity and understanding. At Destination Peace, we embrace this vision. Our goal is to foster unity, promote healing, and create spaces where all voices are heard and valued. We believe peace comes from confronting hard truths, celebrating shared triumphs, and working together for justice.

Reputation Management

Integrity vs. Manufactured Integrity: Rebuilding Trust in a Digital Age

How Reputation Management Firms Repair Tarnished Reputations Understanding the Basics of Reputation Management In today’s digital-first society, public perception can shift in a matter of minutes. One poorly handled crisis or controversial statement can unravel a hard-earned reputation, especially for public figures, celebrities, and corporate leaders. This is where reputation management steps in. These firms operate quietly yet powerfully, shaping public sentiment through calculated strategies aimed at restoring trust. But understanding how they operate allows the public to better separate genuine accountability from staged redemption. How the Narrative is Controlled At the core of reputation management lies a single mission: control the story. When a scandal breaks, firms often launch immediate campaigns filled with positive messaging, high-profile charity work, public apologies, or emotional interviews meant to soften public opinion. SEO tactics play a critical role here. By publishing content that portrays the individual or brand in a favorable light, they push critical coverage lower in search engine rankings, essentially burying the controversy. Social media becomes another front. Influencers are enlisted to post supportive messages, giving the illusion of grassroots backing. Staged PR events such as teary-eyed interviews or carefully written public statements are crafted not necessarily for truth, but for impact. These performances often serve as emotional camouflage. Meanwhile, endorsements from “neutral” experts help reinforce a cleaned-up image. Red Flags to Watch Out For The public must remain alert. Certain catchphrases like “I’ve grown from this,” “I take full responsibility,” or “I’m committed to moving forward” can often signal a scripted attempt at image repair rather than heartfelt accountability. If you notice a sudden increase in carefully curated social media activity or glowing news coverage, it may be part of a coordinated reputation management strategy rather than genuine change. Don’t just take these narratives at face value. Dig deeper. Look into court documents, investigative reporting, or firsthand testimony. Authentic recovery from a reputational blow is messy, slow, and rarely broadcasted through perfect Instagram posts or overly produced interviews. Why Real Accountability Matters Recognizing these tactics helps the public hold influential figures to a higher standard. True integrity isn’t about perfectly crafted comebacks. It’s about acknowledging mistakes without manipulation, making amends beyond the spotlight, and consistently acting with honesty over time. Public trust isn’t rebuilt through optics. It’s earned through consistent, meaningful change. And while reputation management can be a valuable tool, it should never be used to hide the truth. The public deserves transparency, not a storyline crafted by experts in spin. Read more blogs

Survivor stories of resilience

Voices Resurrected from Stone

A Melody of Resilience at Eternal Sunset I had the profound privilege of attending the annual memorial service at Eternal Sunset Memorial Park in New Jersey, a serene haven of reflection known for its majestic monuments honoring those who perished on a perilous journey to freedom. Amidst the tranquil beauty of majestic granite memorials, I premiered my song, Freedom’s Tide, a tribute to survivors’ unyielding spirit. As I performed, I witnessed the faces of the gathered survivors and families etched with grief and resilience reflecting the weight of their shared history. The monuments, towering and solemn, stood as eternal sentinels, commemorating those who did not survive their quests for liberty, their stories carved into the stone. A Shared Celebration of Survival Two days later at a banquet for survivors and their families, I performed, and this time spoke with a versatile interpreter providing instantaneous translation. I felt the room buzzing with a collective strength, uniting individuals who had faced unimaginable trials. After speaking and singing a survivor approached me to say “You gave voice to the souls present at the cemetery and here tonight.” I felt his words echoing the goal of Destination Peace to resonate the power of music to heal and connect, transforming personal struggles into a shared anthem of triumph. Amplifying Voices Through Destination Peace The upcoming episode of Destination Peace’s Groundbreaking Conversations will amplify a survivor’s story. A dear friend, Katherine, who survived swimming through shark-infested waters during the Cultural Revolution to reach Hong Kong, will share her harrowing yet inspiring journey. Her testimony, like those honored at Eternal Sunset, reminds us that personal courage reverberates through communities. Our platform ensures such stories, often overlooked by search engines, reach a global audience, fostering hope and resilience. From Individual Courage to Collective Strength The moments from the memorial’s majestic monuments to the banquet’s shared tears bridge individual pain to collective healing. Our desire is to share stories of resilience and weave a tapestry of human endurance, that reminds us that every survivor’s journey strengthens us all. In honoring their courage, we celebrate humanity’s capacity to rise, remember, and thrive, ensuring no story fades into silence.

Memorial day

Honoring Memorial Day: A Legacy of Sacrifice and Peace

A Father’s Courage on Iwo Jima On Memorial Day, I reflect on my father, a decorated Marine whose bravery shaped my understanding of sacrifice. In 1945, he stood on the iconic Mount Suribachi, chanting the Memorial Prayer for fallen soldiers after the battle of Iwo Jima. His service, immortalized in the Congressional Record by Senator Benjamin Cardin (Volume 161, Number 52, April 13, 2015), exemplifies the price paid for freedom. Continuing The Legacy Decades later, my brother Eli, an Army Special Forces captain during the Vietnam era, and I upheld this tradition, chanting the same solemn prayer at Arlington National Cemetery in 2014, honoring fallen Jewish chaplains. The identical melodic line echoed through time, linking our voices to our father’s own words from Iwo Jima, sixty-six years before. A Call to Action: Destination Peace Memories of my father’s unwavering commitment to duty shaped my path. His core belief that lasting peace cannot be left to chance was a motivating factor to establish Destination Peace. He often warned, “You cannot leave essential work to others. Without preemptively pursuing peace, you will eventually be forced into war.” His wisdom became my guiding principle. Building Bridges Across Borders As outlined in our April 2025 newsletter, Destination Peace continues efforts to foster understanding worldwide, with missions in Ghana, Nigeria, Austria, Hungary, and North Macedonia. Our site features an article, “The Enduring Legacy of Kajiya Fumiaki,” which highlights the story of a Hiroshima survivor who devoted his life to teaching empathy over conflict. His powerful words, The Atomic Bomb Must Never Be Used for a Third Time” serve as a reminder that peace is not a luxury, but a necessity. Memorial Day’s True Meaning Memorial Day is more than just remembrance… it is a call to action. It honors lives lost in service and demands we build a world where war becomes obsolete. To the next generation, I say: Make peace your mission. Honor the sacrifices of our heroes by ensuring their legacies lead to lasting harmony. Let voices like Fumiaki’s, my father’s, and his comrades inspire a future defined not by war, but by the triumph of diplomacy and understanding.

A Beacon of Hope in a Divided World

Building Trust Through Neutrality Destination Peace’s aspirations are to be a beacon of hope in a polarized world, steadfastly committed to remaining as apolitical as possible. Guiding Principles for Lasting Peace Central to Destination Peace’s work are its core tenets: fact-based reporting, the neutrality of music and peaceful resolution. Pinball as art

Tilting Toward Peace

The silver ball rockets across the playfield; a tiny celestial body caught in the dance of flashing lights and ringing bells. A Celebration in Time It occurred a week ago at a close friend’s 79th birthday celebration, which took place inside Silverball Retro Arcade in Asbury Park, New Jersey. A place where time bends and past and present coalesce in the glow of 150 machines, each a testament to human creativity. Pinball as Art: More Than Mechanics Pinball is more than mechanics and circuitry. It’s an art form, an evolving canvas of color, movement, and sound. Early machines had wooden playfields, their simplicity a quiet prelude to the riot of pop bumpers, ramps, and dazzling displays that would follow. The introduction of flippers transformed passive observation into an act of control, a moment of rebellion against gravity’s pull. Innovation Through the Decades In every era, design pushed boundaries. The electromechanical wonders of the 1960s hummed with intricate relays. The solid-state revolution of the 1970s infused games with microprocessors, bringing them to life with voices, animations, and digital precision. The 1980s turned pinball into a spectacle with spiraling ramps, multiball frenzies, and themes lifted from pop culture. Even today, modern machines integrate LEDs and interactive elements, creating immersive experiences that go far beyond mere gameplay. A Personal Encounter with History Standing inside Silverball, I launch into a round on a 1950 Knockout, feeling the weight of its history beneath my fingertips. Later, a 1977 Evel Knievel sends the ball soaring, its vibrant playfield capturing the adrenaline of its namesake. In these moments, decades collapse. The lines between player and artist begin to blur. Rhythm, Harmony, and the Pursuit of Peace Pinball, like music, is a pursuit of rhythm and harmony. Each tilt, each flick of the flipper, becomes a calculated dance. It’s a chase for that perfect moment of connection. My own journey spreading peace through melodies across continents mirrors this quest. Like pinball’s steady evolution, my path is built one note at a time, one performance after another. Shared Purpose in Light and Sound Whether through flashing lights or resonating chords, the goal remains the same. To bridge distances. To spark happiness. To craft something greater than the sum of its parts. Each machine, from tactile levers to digital chimes, mirrors my own quest: spreading peace through music across continents for the past ten years. Just as pinball advanced through incremental innovation, my journey has been building slowly, note by note, country by country. Where pinball’s lights draw players, Destination Peace’s universal anthem unites listeners. Both chase moments of joy. Each tilt teaches a lesson. Each score carries hope.
