In an era of mounting urban challenges, Skopje stands as a beacon of hope, thanks to the visionary leadership of Mayor Danela Arsovska. Since her historic 2021 election as the city’s first female mayor, Mayor Arsovska has transformed North Macedonia’s capital into a shining model of sustainable, inclusive, and culturally vibrant urban revival, a blueprint for cities worldwide.
Mayor Arsovska’s results-driven approach is best exemplified by the Skopje Urban Greening Master Plan. Committing to plant over 100,000 trees annually and engaging schools, organizations, and local citizens, this ambitious initiative is reversing environmental neglect and bringing new life to the city’s neighborhoods. Five new mega-parks, a botanical garden, a wastewater treatment facility, and the adoption of sustainability standards show that Skopje’s green promise is not only visionary but also accountable and measurable.
Yet, Mayor Arsovska’s leadership reaches far beyond environmental renewal. Her focus on equal opportunity has brought groundbreaking programs for people with disabilities and the elderly, strengthening social cohesion in a city celebrated for its diversity, uniting Macedonians, Albanians, Roma, and more. Skopje’s selection as the European Capital of Culture for 2028, through its “Culture Over Division” initiative, is proof of her commitment to healing divides and inspiring urban pride through creativity and shared heritage.
We are deeply impressed by Mayor Arsovska’s visionary leadership and commitment to creating a better future for Skopje’s citizens. Her tireless efforts to promote cultural and educational initiatives have not only enriched the city’s fabric but also perfectly aligned with Destination Peace’s mission of fostering global understanding and cooperation.
As a testament to her outstanding work, our founder is eager to personally meet with Mayor Arsovska at the close of 2025 to express our admiration for her policies and initiatives. We believe that her transformative leadership serves as a shining example of how cities can be catalysts for positive change, driving innovation and inclusive urban progress that can be replicated worldwide.
By recognizing and celebrating Mayor Arsovska’s outstanding leadership, we aim to strengthen the bond between Destination Peace and the city of Skopje, the birthplace of Mother Theresa. We will learn firsthand how Mayor Arsovska is inspiring a new generation of leaders and change-makers who bask in her commitment to creating a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world.
As chair of the UN Forum of Mayors and a member of the Global Parliament of Mayors, she’s connecting local progress to global solutions, championing practical action and unity over empty rhetoric.
Mayor Arsovska’s story is a call to mayors everywhere: Cities can be laboratories for innovation and engines of hope. Through bold vision, inclusivity, and action, Skopje proves that urban transformation is possible. Her leadership is an inspiration for every city striving to overcome challenges and deliver momentous results for every citizen.
