Unlocking the Secrets of a Great Voice
Every day, we rely on our voices whether we’re singing, speaking, or just chatting with friends. But have you ever wondered what makes some voices sound so powerful and effortless? As a professional singer and international spokesperson for Destination Peace, I’m gearing up for the Voice Foundation’s 54th Annual Symposium on Care of the Professional Voice in Philadelphia. This five-day deep dive into vocal science and health is packed with discoveries that could help anyone, whether you sing on stage or just want to take better care of your voice.
The Science Behind Singing
The symposium brings together top experts in vocal health to explore how the voice works, from the muscles that help us hit the perfect note to breakthroughs in technology that keep voices strong. Workshops and master classes will cover everything from keeping your voice healthy to techniques for sounding your best, something I’ll be applying to my upcoming global tour with Destination Peace. Whether you’re a musician or simply curious about how your voice works, there’s plenty to learn.

Learning Professional Voice Care from the Best
One of the most exciting parts of the symposium is the master classes, where seasoned professionals offer hands-on training. I’ll be attending with Professor William Riley, my voice trainer of 28 years, and his wife, Dr. Linda M. Carroll, PhD, CCC-SLP, both highly respected in the vocal community. Their insights have helped me overcome challenges like vocal strain and illness, proving just how important expert guidance can be.
Celebrating Icons of the Voice
This year’s event also honors amazing artists who have left their mark on the vocal world. Renée Fleming, an opera legend whose performances continue to inspire me and the opera world, will be recognized, and Chandrika Tandon, whose recording sessions I’ve witnessed firsthand, will receive the Quintana Award, an achievement that connects distinctly with Destination Peace’s mission of blending music and wellness. The symposium is a unique mix of learning, inspiration, and community, an invitation to discover the magic behind every sound we make.
